Tasty Fit Mom

You’ve tried everything to lose weight.
Not just exercising, but every kind of exercise—running, lifting, yoga, Pilates, CrossFit.
Not just dieting, but every kind of diet—Weight Watchers, Atkins, vegetarian/vegan, Paleo, low carb, SlimFast, Beachbody.
Not just supplements—but hundreds of dollars of pills, powders, shakes, you name it.
Not just self improvement, but every kind of self improvement—meditation, prayer, deep breathing, affirmation, self love.
Then why is it STILL not working?

You’ve followed the rules. You’ve read the blogs. You’ve bought the supplements. Cooked the food. You feel you should be able to figure this out.

But you haven’t. And it frustrates and exhausts you to no end. It doesn’t seem fair.

Your hormones could be to blame.

My team of Dietitians and I see clients just like you—people who are seemingly doing everything “right” and yet they aren’t seeing the fat loss they want. I know how frustrating it is to work so hard and not see results on the scale or in the mirror!

That’s why we always look deeper in our 1-1 coaching—beyond just food, calories, and exercise. We know that the real answers lie in the commonly overlooked factors (many of which I share with you in my #1 bestselling book.)

One key that has been a huge “a-ha” for both myself and our clients, is hormones!
When your hormones are in harmony, your metabolism is supported and you feel amazing—you’re energized, in control of your moods, your cravings fade away, and you’re ready to conquer the world!

On the flip side, when they’re out of balance, you feel exhausted, out of control, and your metabolism tanks. (And that's when it seems impossible to lose weight, or worse—you gain weight.)

Four Key Hormones and How to Keep ‘Em Balanced:

A. Insulin

You can think of insulin as your master hormone because when insulin is at work, the activities of other major hormones are suppressed. When insulin plays its trump card, all other hormones step out of the way. Insulin’s main job is to store fat, which is why it’s important to keep insulin’s workload as light as possible. When insulin is working hard, you’re packing on more pounds.

How to keep insulin on the sidelines: Keep your blood sugar levels stable to keep insulin levels low...or else insulin takes over the show. Do this by eating in PFC balance to stay off the blood sugar roller coaster that drives insulin (and your weight) up.

B. Cortisol

Cortisol (also known as your “stress hormone”) is one of the most important hormones in your body because without it, you couldn’t handle stress. It regulates your “fight or flight” response, and exists as a survival mechanism—it is triggered when you are in danger and is meant to be released in small doses and for short lengths of time. It serves its purpose when you need to kick into high gear. It increases your blood sugars and blood pressure. You can thank cortisol for the surge of energy you get when you are being chased by a tiger. Because cortisol causes your blood sugars to rise, any time you are stressed out, you have elevated blood sugars, so it’s as if you’re eating high amounts of sugary foods all day long. As we just discussed, this causes insulin—your fat storing hormone—to come out to do its job of transporting sugar from your bloodstream to your cells to be stored as fat. And, well, you see where that can lead. This is how you gain weight when you’re stressed...independent of your nutrition...without even eating any more, less, or differently!

How to keep cortisol balanced: Manage your stress. I know…easier said than done. But the reality is that stress is the enemy of a balanced hormonal system. In short, when your body is stressed, it shifts its resources to make cortisol, your stress hormone, and and other hormones such as the sex hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, suffer. (That explains why you might notice a low sex drive when you’re stressed out.) Take time out to deep breathe, go for a walk, journal for a few minutes, talk to a counselor, take stress-reducing supplements, and make it a priority to keep your stress in check.

C and D) Estrogen and Testosterone

These are BIG ones. Estrogen is what we often think of as our female hormone and testosterone our male hormone. A lot of people don’t realize that both sexes have both hormones, and that estrogen dominance can occur in both men and women. Testosterone tends to be converted into estrogen when men and women gain weight, and problems arise when estrogen levels are out of balance. This can easily happen when we are under stress, eating processed foods, consuming soy, not getting enough sleep, taking hormones (like the birth control pill), and also when we’re exposed to estrogen-like compounds found in plastic and styrofoam. These problems continue to pile up if we aren’t doing anything to eliminate the negative effects. When estrogen levels are too high, we see an increase in the prevalence of breast cancer (in both women AND men!), infertility, low libido and weight gain. Women specifically can suffer from endometriosis, excessive PMS, perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms when their hormones are out of whack.
What is a healthy lifestyle?

We’ve heard it many times before, but do we really know what a healthy lifestyle means?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity,” which implies that this concept goes beyond the existence or lack of existence illnesses.

Consequently, more than just healthy living, we must talk about a healthy lifestyle that includes food, physical exercise, preventive healthcare, work, the relationship with the environment, and social activity.

How can we live a healthy lifestyle?

A healthy lifestyle is not achieved overnight, but we have to be consistent. You have to follow a good plan based on healthy habits. By doing this, our bodies and minds will get in to a rhythm that will eventually become second nature.  It’s common for people to have routines that are only a little healthy, or not healthy at all. Maybe that’s the way it is, because it’s easier and more comfortable than doing it correctly (or at least that’s the popular belief).

Due to the great misinformation that “Dr. Google” provides, it can be difficult to know what are the best avenues to take to create a healthy lifestyle. In this blog, you will find everything you need to get you moving towards a much healthier lifestyle as soon as possible. if you are unsure where to start, you have come to the right place!

What are the components of a healthy lifestyle?

From the perspective mentioned previously, it can be determined that some of the habits necessary to lead a healthy lifestyle are the following:

SOCIAL ACTIVITY

Your social life is actually a fundamental aspect of your health . Social isolation can lead to a gradual and irreversible deterioration of physical and mental abilities, including physical disability and dementia.

Being happy with others is essential for you as an individual. But first make sure you are happy with yourself.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE

It’s generally recommended that you should get at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.  Walking at a rapid pace is enough – as long as it gets your heart rate up!

The NHS states: “One way to do your recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity is to do 30 minutes on 5 days every week.”

This allows you to not only burn excess calories and strengthen muscles and bones, but also helps to control blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose levels. In addition, this contributes to a decrease in stress levels and helps you sleep better. It also helps you acquire a state of relaxation, avoid mood changes, improve self-esteem, and attain a state of personal satisfaction. It can also be a good way to develop a healthy social activity when the exercise is practiced with others.

MENTAL BALANCE

This does not only refer to the existence of mental illnesses, but to the state of emotional and psychological well-being. Good mental health is necessary to maintain and develop cognitive abilities, social relations, and for coping with the personal and professional challenges of daily life. Stress, fatigue, and anxiety are, among others, some of the signs that indicate that your mental state is not entirely healthy.

BALANCE DIET

A healthy diet is achieved by including all the foods that appear in MyPlate (which replaced the classic food pyramid in 2011), but in the right proportions and with the correct quantity. The main aim should be to maintain the nutritional needs of the body and give us enough energy for the day.

MyPlate is divided into four sections of approximately 30% grains, 40% vegetables, 10% fruits, and 20% protein, accompanied by a smaller circle representing dairy, such as a yogurt cup or glass of milk.

GET GOOD QUALITY SLEEP

It is necessary to sleep well and for an adequate number of hours – at least 8 hours a night. This will help you rest and generate energy for the next day.  Insomnia is a cause of high blood pressure, heart disease, and mental, metabolic and endocrine diseases, so try and switch off before heading to bed.

ENJOY YOUR FREE TIME

You will be surprised to know the amount of people that live to work instead of working to live – or maybe not – maybe you are one of them! So, please enjoy your free time, and use it in an efficient and pleasant way.

ENJOY HEALTHY SEX

Great news – sex is not only fun but also good for your health! It is great for your cardiovascular health and relaxes our minds. However, to protect yourself from sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and syphilis, you should always practice safe sex, using condoms if you are having sex with multiple partners of a partner with a history of STDs.

EXERCISE THE MIND

It’s not only your body that needs exercise! Exercising your mind will help keep it working well  and avoid cognitive deterioration and the appearance of dementia.

Try to give your brain a regular workout with exercises that enhance memory, attention, ability to focus, and learning new topics. This will help you avoid, or at least delays these issues.

What negative lifestyles affect health and quality of life?

Not sticking to all of the above will obviously have negative effects on you. One of the key areas of an unhealthy lifestyle are making choices that involve toxic products.

TOXIC HABITS AND PRODUCTS

Tobacco, alcohol, and drugs have a very negative impact on health.  There was a popular belief until recent years that one daily drink of wine or beer was totally fine, but new studies have proven that even this can influence our health in a negative way.

There are many products to which exposure, occasionally or continuous, can result in a serious risk to our health. The environmental pollution of cities is considered one of the most important risk factors for health.

What is the relationship between quality of life and healthy lifestyles?
Quality of life is related to the following aspects:

  1. Satisfaction of needs.
  2. Satisfaction in daily activities.
  3. Achievement of goals in life.
  4. Self-image and attitude towards life.
  5. Involvement of personal and socio-environmental factors.

Benefits of a healthy lifestyle

The benefits of a living healthy lifestyle are almost limitless. Having healthy habits and routines will allow us to stay active and achieve our goals. In doing this, our internal satisfaction will increase and will remain at the highest level.

We must not forget that if we are not healthy, our chances of doing activities that we like are drastically reduced.

With healthy habits, we will only see benefits, both for ourselves and for the society that surrounds us.

BENEFITS OF LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOURSELF

  1. Overall, you will feel better! Your body and mind will have more freedom and you will be able to do things that you could not before.
  2. Your fatigue will be reduced when doing any physical activity, since you will gain strength.
  3. When you feel good about yourself, you will express it on the outside, and those closest to will feel it too. In this sense, your social relationships will improve.
  4. You will rest properly, which will make you full of energy every morning.
  5. You will make decisions correctly thanks to the mental balance you have.
  6. This mental balance will help you  avoid falling into the consumption of toxic substances.
  7. You will be active, minimising the risk of injury.
  8. You will have a varied and balanced diet that will make your body and mind stay strong and healthy.

BENEFITS OF LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR SOCIETY

  1. You will enjoy helping others to get started with their healthy habits routine. You will also share with them all of the benefits that you have received from following your own healthy routine!.
  2. Expenses to the health system will be reduced, since you will fall sick less often thanks to the strengthening of your immune system.
  3. Last but not least, you will be respectful with the environment that surrounds you and as a consequence you will contribute to keeping the planet clean and in good condition for future generations.

Importance of a healthy lifestyle

If you had to choose between living a healthy lifestyle or a life that is not healthy, you would probably choose the first one. This is because we all like to feel our best. Many people confuse living a healthy life with being a slave to a diet or exercise routine. To think of it like that is a big mistake. Don’t think about it in this way, because you will feel put yourself under unnecessary pressure and will want to avoid a healthy lifestyle due to fear.

Healthy lifestyle habits do not consist of extreme diets to lose weight, but instead help you make healthy, daily meals. If you take up a diet to lose weight, it will often consist of eating less than your body needs. With this option, you will also be banned from many foods. On the other hand, if you follow a healthy and balanced diet, you will not have to discard any food from your diet or feel hungry from skipping any meals  during the day.

As for the physical exercise that you do, you have on one side the extreme fitness routines and on the other healthy physical activity. The first one can be difficult to maintain and can actually have adverse effects on your health.. Diseases in the form of muscle and joint injuries can appear in your body. They could even be more serious if you perform these activities at a pace that is not appropriate for your fitness level. On the other hand, if you practice physical exercise according to your current condition, you will improve your health.

A healthy lifestyle improves your chances of conceiving

If your goal in the short term or in the near future is to get pregnant, you must live a healthy lifestyle. For women, it can help improve ovulation and uterus health, both important for conception. For men, a healthy lifestyle will help increase the quality of their sperm.

Once you become pregnant, you should continue taking care of yourself. Inside your body, your baby will live for nine months. During that time, it will feed on what you transfer through the placenta. Therefore, if you eat badly, the baby will eat badly. If you smoke, the baby smokes. If you sleep little, the baby will not rest as it should.

The best option is to have a series of healthy habits before, during, and after pregnancy. In this way, you will achieve a healthy family environment for the baby and future child to develop correctly. In addition, you will instill in them, and educate them about a healthy lifestyle that will serve them forever. It is proven that if healthy habits are started from an early age it’s easier to continue them. Therefore, you will be leaving your son or daughter a very beneficial legacy for the rest of their  life.

We might say a beautiful woman is born with her looks or that she was endowed with good genes. But what if some of her beauty comes from reversible marks on top of her genes? The epigenetic tags on her DNA might be contributing to her glowing skin, young complexion, and silken hair. Interestingly, there may even be ways in which simple lifestyle changes could adjust these epigenetic tags, modulating the expression of certain genes that promote beauty and health.

What if we could reverse aging and rejuvenate old, wrinkled skin to its once glowing state? What if we could even prevent premature aging altogether or make minor adjustments in our lives to influence our epigenetic signature and stifle the hallmarks of aging? Unsurprisingly, the cosmetic industry has already been tapping into the science of epigenetics(the study of heritable changes in phenotype that does not involve changes in the underlying DNA sequence) to reveal new beauty and anti-aging possibilities.

“There is ground-breaking research underway to determine the differences between old and young genes,” dermatologist Zoe D. Draelos, MD, FAAD, consulting professor at Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, N.C. told the American Academy of Dermatology. “The hope is that by understanding how to make old genes act younger and how to keep young genes from getting old, we can better advise our patients on caring for their skin.”

Several companies have begun the journey to understanding personalized skincare and anti-aging. For example, EpigenCare was the first to develop personal epigenomic tests to determine which skincare products are optimal for an individual’s skin. Ingredient recommendations can be made based on a person’s unique epigenetic signature, which reveals factors like skin elasticity, pigmentation, DNA damage, and age.

Researchers have long known that epigenetic mechanisms are crucially connected to the aging process. Understanding the potential for certain foods, activities, or behaviors to epigenetically combat aging might improve our health, our skin, and restore beauty. Although these claims are speculative and further research into the epigenetics of beauty is still necessary, take a look at a few beauty tips based on epigenetics that you might consider:

i. Use Olive Oil Instead of Butter

Used for health benefits since ancient times, it’s believed that extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) can exert beneficial effects by modulating genes involved in proliferative, antioxidant, and inflammatory pathways.

Olive oil contains molecules that may possess epigenetic regulatory power and could reduce age-related effects of inflammation.

A comprehensive review article in the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology concluded that consuming EVOO was connected to the activation of defense, protective, and repair epigenetic mechanisms. Furthermore, a study published in the International Journal of Oncology found that “natural phenolic molecules from EVOO might unexpectedly function as regulators of histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity.” HDACs are epigenetic enzymes that remove acetyl groups from histones, impacting the expression of certain genes.

A team of researchers set out to investigate whether a virgin olive oil based breakfast could reduce the expression of pro-inflammatory genes in individuals with metabolic syndrome. Ultimately, they found that consuming virgin olive oil, which is rich in phenol compounds, can repress expression of multiple genes related to inflammation, potentially reducing its age-related effects.

Although they did not specifically measure the effects on the appearance of the skin, the link between proliferative, antioxidant, and inflammatory pathways and poor skin gives hope to the possible beauty and anti-aging benefits of olive oil.

ii. Snack on Plant Phytochemicals

Not only has research found that we may be able to epigenetically reduce cancer risk by eating flavinoids, a particular type of phytochemical, but we might also be able to improve our skin via inflammatory or age-related pathways. Foods that contain valuable phytochemicals include red, orange, and green fruits and vegetables like broccoli, carrots, and leafy greens. See a complete list of food sources that contain phytochemicals and their benefits by the American Institute for Cancer Research.

Aging and the signs that accompany it are closely related to inflammation and DNA damage. For instance, premature aging, also termed “inflammaging,” is intertwined with chronic low-grade systemic inflammation and the deterioration of the immune system. It’s also thought to play a significant role in collagen and elastin breakdown. Since our diet is closely intertwined with aging, eating the proper food could aid in preventing age-related diseases and potentially stifle the unwanted physical markers of age.

“Most plant-derived dietary phytochemicals and macro- and micronutrients modulate oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling and regulate metabolic pathways and bioenergetics,” researchers from the University Antwerp and the University of Belgrade reported in Clinical Epigenetics. This can impact epigenetic patterns of gene expression and may potentially reduce age-related inflammation.

For example, tissues and cells of aging organisms demonstrate changes in histone modifications, such as increased histone H4K16 acetylation (H4K16ac) and decreased histone H3K9 methylation (H4K9me). Histone acetylation is defined as the addition of a chemical mark known as an acetyl group onto histone proteins that DNA wraps around and histone methylation is characterized by the addition of a methyl group.

These histone modifications impact the chromatin structure, or the protein-DNA complex, by opening or closing it to make genes more or less accessible for expression. If eating plant phytochemicals and macro- and micronutrients exerts an epigenetic effect on genes related to inflammation and oxidative stress, then perhaps we could restore skin and improve signs of aging.

According to Dr. Draelos in a Dermatology Times article, many companies have created cosmetic products such as topical skin cream that are chockfull of micronutrients. However, he noted that they are best consumed, not applied on top of the skin.

“This epigenetic research will help us better understand how diet and certain ingredients affect skin health on a cellular level,” he added.

iii. Sip Some Red Wine

Not only does that glass of red wine help you unwind after a hard day of work, but it might also help give your skin that coveted healthy glow. Resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, has potential as an anti-inflammatory agent in human skin and has been connected to longevity.

Resveratrol, a compound in wine, has been shown to positively influence pathways connected to inflammation and longevity.

According to researchers from Brigham Young University, “Resveratrol can ameliorate the aging of human skin by influencing the expression of human skin genes in a positive manner by significantly stimulating SIRT1, extracellular matrix proteins, such as collagen and elastin and antioxidants, while significantly inhibiting inflammatory and aging biomarkers.”

Sirtuin-1, or SIRT1, is a histone deacetylase that protects cells from stress events. The personal care industry has placed significant emphasis on studying HDACs and epigenetic modulators in order to preserve expression in younger cells and organisms and develop anti-aging treatments.

iv. Cut Back on Sweets

High sugar intake not only increases your risk for obesity and cancer, but it might even make you age faster. A study in Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging found that high blood glucose could damage the end caps of our DNA called telomeres, which has been associated with aging. The higher the blood sugar, the more significant the damage was to the telomere and DNA.

This study suggests that a low carbohydrate diet might be beneficial to one’s health and could even reduce aging by epigenetically suppressing toxic oxidative stress.

According to Dr. Frank Lipman, founder and director of the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City, sugar may be the worst offender if you don’t want to stimulate premature aging genes. “Sugar is the most pro-aging food substance out there,” he told YouBeauty.

v. Soak up Sun in Moderation

We all know the dangers of tanning or getting too much sun exposure, but did you know it might epigenetically make you age faster, increasing wrinkles and age spots? Premature aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and other sources is known as photoaging.

In a study published in Genome Biology, scientists analyzed the DNA of sun-protected and sun-exposed skin in individuals younger than 35 and those over 60 years old. They looked at the level of DNA methylation – an epigenetic mark thought to have a key role in aging – in samples taken from the face and the inner arm.

They found much less DNA methylation, referred to as DNA hypomethylation, in the sun-exposed skin of older individuals. This reduced level of DNA methylation, however, was not detected in the older individuals who protected their skin or in the skin of younger individuals. This hints that the sun might epigenetically impact your skin differently depending on your age and might actually affect you more severely the older you get.

In light of this possible underlying epigenetic connection between aging and sun exposure, we can take action to protect our skin from aging faster. Using sunscreen when lying out can not only reduce the chances of harmful skin cancer, but it may also protect the body from wrinkles, age spots, and loose, dry skin.

Underlying Epigenetic Mysteries of Beauty

Epigenetics offers some interesting insight into the ways in which we might influence chemical marks on our DNA to turn aging-related genes on or off and improve our beauty and health. Eating foods with important phytochemicals, using olive oil in place of butter, and cutting out sugar in our diet while keeping red wine might all work epigenetically to beautify skin and reduce pesky signs of aging.

Utilizing individual epigenetic signatures may be part of the future for personalized skincare.

However, it is not exactly clear how we may apply the results gained from these controlled studies to the complex human body. Inflammation and oxidative stress, for instance, are critical beneficial processes as long as they are controlled. Simply blocking these activities certainly does not guarantee flawless skin and glowing beauty – doing so might actually block skin repair.

Additional research should certainly be carried out to further elucidate what lifestyle or diet changes we can make to promote beauty. Recently, the cosmetics industry has certainly been trying to tap into the power of epigenetics, with multidiscipline teams of biologists, dermatologists and formulation experts working together to uncover how lifestyle changes and epigenetic agents might enhance our beauty and health.

If you want to lose weight the healthy way and keep the pounds off for good, you should slim down at a slow and steady rate. Most experts recommend that you lose roughly one to two pounds per week, even though you may not consistently lose two pounds every week. So how do you reach that goal? You adjust your energy balance to reach the correct calorie deficit.

To lose one pound per week, you need to reach a total calorie deficit of about 3500 calories per week or 500 calories per day. To lose two pounds per week, you need to double that number. So you need to reach a 1000-calorie per day deficit or 7000 calories per week. Sound complicated? It’s not too hard, once you get the hang of it. And you can use a calculator like this one to figure out how many calories you should be eating for weight loss.

Budgeting your calories is like budgeting money. Weight loss author Mandy Levy explains it perfectly. “Calories add up to pounds just as spare change adds up to a dollar. A dollar, or one hundred cents, can be distributed in many ways: 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes, 4 quarters…and countless combinations thereof. There are just as many ways to distribute your calories.” If you can budget your calories to come up “short” by 500-1000 calories each day, you’ll lose weight.

Creative Ways to Reach a Calorie Deficit

The math is simple, but changing your habits to eat less and move more is hard. So, to take some of the guesswork out of the process, Mandy and I put our heads together and came up with 10 simple ways to create a 500 to 1000 calorie deficit each day.

Each point below contains a creative calorie “budgeting” combination to help you reach your goal. You’ll see options for a 500-calorie per day deficit to lose one pound per week or a 1000-calorie per day deficit to lose two pounds per week. As always, calorie counts are estimates, so your exact numbers may vary. And each activity or food swap must result in a deficit. That means you can’t compensate for your diet-friendly behavior with extra food or naptime. But each combination should put you one step closer to reaching your goal.

The Morning Cleanse + Couch Workout

500-Calorie Deficit to Lose 1 Pound per Week

“Start your program with a tiny cleanse,” suggests Mandy. “On your first day of your healthy diet plan, swap out your breakfast (250 calories) and your mid-morning snack (150 calories) for two Evolution Fresh Sweet Greens & Lemon juices (100 calories each) that you’ll find at any Starbucks.” Then by noon, you will already have reached a 200-calorie deficit. To reach a full 500-calorie deficit, get active when you watch TV in the evening. Believe or not, a super-fun living room workout can burn 300 calories or more.

1000-Calorie Deficit to Lose 2 Pounds per Week

At lunch and dinner, skip the starch. Don’t each chips with your sandwich at lunchtime and skip the baked potato with your dinner. The starch itself isn’t necessarily a huge calorie expense. A baked potato, for example, only provides 150-200 calories. But the toppings that you add can easily total several hundred more.

The No-Excuses Workout

500-Calorie Deficit to Lose 1 Pound per Week

“Go to the gym!” says Mandy. It sounds simple, but we all come up with reasons to avoid it. “Don’t make excuses,” she says. Mandy suggests that you choose fat-burning cardio exercises that you can quantify so you know exactly how many calories you are burning during your session. Set a goal to burn at least 300 calories. “Time your visit to the gym with your favorite TV show (or TV marathon) so that when you’re running or walking on the treadmill or elliptical, you can just zone out and rack up the miles.”

Then instead of rewarding yourself with dessert, skip the sweets and reward yourself with an additional 200 calorie deficit to reach your total 500-calorie deficit for the day.

At lunchtime, skip the bread on your sandwich and wrap it in lettuce instead. Iceberg or bib lettuce works well. Some dieters even use a hollowed out cucumber instead of bread. And since you don’t have bread, you won’t need the usual condiments either. Without bread and mayo, you’ve cut your lunch total by 250 calories.

To burn an extra 250 calories, jack up the speed or increase the incline when you’re on your cardio machine at the gym. Just a small adjustment can add up to an extra 200-300 calories during your workout.

Saturday Night Savings

You can easily save calories when you go out with friends. For a diet-friendly restaurant meal, Mandy suggests that you bring your own…whatever. “Bring your own low-cal salad dressings, condiments, cheeses, and other accouterments out to dinner with you,” she says. “You’ll save beaucoup calorie bucks. Who cares if you look like Mary Poppins extracting all these treasures from your purse? You’re about to be skinny!” And tell the waiter to skip the bread. Without bread or high calorie sauces and dressings, you’ll easily save 500 calories (or more).

You can also save mega calories by skipping the booze. In fact, you can easily lose weight if you give up drinking either temporarily or permanently. Each drink contains anywhere from 100-300 calories or more. Add an hour on the dance floor and along with your diet-friendly restaurant meal, you’ve reached a 1000-calorie deficit for the day.

Party With Your Pooch

Your dog is the perfect weight loss coach. He’s always ready to help you burn calories to slim down. To burn 250 calories, take your pooch for a brisk one-hour walk.

Then after your calorie-controlled dinner, enjoy an “imposter” dessert. “One of my favorite desserts is my Taffy Apple, says Mandy. She combines a 60-calorie Sugar-Free Caramel Snack Pack with an 80-calorie crisp Granny Smith apple. This 140 calorie dessert is nearly 300 calories lighter than a typical bowl of ice cream, so you’ll not only reach a 500 calorie deficit, you’ll actually exceed it.

To turn your dog walking session into a dog workout, take your pooch to the park for a parcourse workout. You’ll find these fit trails at many local parks and community centers. It’s a great way to burn calories and build strength.

The Math and Miles Plan

One simple way to make sure you are reaching your calorie deficit each day is to calculate your BMR. Your BMR or basal metabolic rate is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic functions like breathing. If you eat only that number of calories and then walk about five miles throughout the day, you should reach a 500-calorie deficit. “Walking to work, running on a treadmill, taking an evening stroll, choosing the stairs, doing housework, chasing after your kids, it all counts,” says Mandy. Get an activity monitor and track movement. “Five miles is easier to accomplish than you’d think, especially if you’re somewhat active already. This is the healthiest system, and the steady vision to aim for.”

If you are already quite active during the day, add more movement. You can turn your housecleaning chores into a workout to tidy up and tone up at the same time. Or turn your evening stroll into an interval walking workout. Intervals are a great way to improve fitness and burn more fat.

Drink Water at Work

Drink water instead of typical flavored beverages to save hundreds of calories during the day. Beverages like soda, flavored coffee, and even sports beverages are filled with sugar and other fattening ingredients. And some of those drinks contain hundreds of calories. Head to the water cooler instead to reach a 500-calorie deficit.

Burn an extra 500 calories by completing a one-hour stair climbing workout. If that sounds too challenging, don’t worry. You don’t even need a gym membership to complete this workout. In fact, you can lose weight at work with this simple routine. Just take hourly breaks and walk the stairs for 7-10 minutes. After several sessions, you’ll have a full one-hour workout completed.

Burn Calories With the Kids

Got kids at home? Put them to work? Kids love to play games and they love to run around. So put that boundless energy to work. Take the kids to the park for a game of tag. This interval style workout can burn 300-400 calories in an hour.  Then head to the playground equipment for a family-friendly workout to reach your complete 500-calorie deficit.

Pack a healthy picnic to bring to the park but keep your calories in control by cutting all of your portions in half. If you do this during two of your meals during the day you can cut another 400-500 calories to reach the calorie deficit you need to lose 2 pounds per week.

Use Slimming Smoothies

Meal replacements are an easy way to cut 500 calories from your daily intake. If you replace one or two meals with a lean smoothie, you should reach your goal. But you have to make a diet-friendly smoothie. That means you don’t just throw a bunch of ingredients into the blender and hope for the best. A green smoothie is a great option. It combines spinach, apple, banana, and protein powder. It doesn’t sound great, but you’ll love it.

Do mini workouts today to burn another 500 calories. Do four intense 5-minute weight loss workout sessions to burn an extra 400 calories. Just make sure you exercise hard enough to take advantage of the full calorie burn. The bonus is that after this style of workout, you actually burn more calories for the rest of the day because of a metabolism-boosting effect called EPOC.

Snack Smarter for Weight Loss

Calories from daily snacks can total more than the calories you consume at mealtime. Those little nibbles add up! So to reduce your caloric intake by 500 calories, replace your snacks with a single serving of a fresh fruit or vegetable. You can also eliminate the snacks altogether. Believe it or not, snacking is not required when you’re trying to lose weight. In fact, it can actually cause weight gain in some dieters.

Hate hard workouts? No problem! Burn an extra 500 calories with two easier (but longer) workouts during the day. Schedule an early morning walk for an hour in the morning and then again in the evening. Each workout should burn roughly 250 calories.

When in Doubt…

Each of these strategies combines an exercise solution with a food strategy to reach your calorie deficit goal, But, let’s face it. There will be days when you can’t complete both or even one of these specific tasks to reach your weight loss goal. And that’s okay. When in doubt, simply eat a bit less. Cut your food portions in half, eliminate sauces and spreads, and drink water. These three simple steps will reduce your caloric intake on a daily and weekly basis.

What matters most is consistency. If you have a bad day, laugh it off, and get back on track tomorrow. “Dieting sucks—we all know that,” says Mandy. “But attitude is everything and success can be a long-ish journey. The least you can do is have a little fun getting there.”
You don’t have to kill yourself at the gym every day to slim down. There are easy exercises to lose weight that you can do at home or on the go. In fact, sometimes easy workouts work better.

So before you try CrossFit, join a hardcore boot camp class, or sign up for heavy duty HIIT program, find out how fast weight loss exercises can speed up weight loss and then incorporate one of these workout routines into your schedule.

Easy Exercises to Lose Weight Fast

To lose weight, you need to create a specific calorie deficit. For example, you might want to reach a 500-calorie deficit each day to lose one pound per week. Or you might set a goal to reach a 1000-calorie daily deficit to  lose 2 pounds per week. Either way, you need to control the number of calories you eat and burn more calories with movement to reach your target.

Many dieters start an intense workout plan to slim down. But, sometimes it’s better to do easy exercises to lose weight fast. There are four ways that easy exercise can help you to slim down:

  • Improve daily non-exercise movement. Easy workouts are designed to increase your heart rate to burn calories, but they shouldn’t wear you down. So you don’t feel the need to take a nap or lay on the couch all day after doing a workout. This helps you to stay active throughout the day and boost the number of calories you burn from NEAT.
  • Exercise every day. When you do easy workouts, you can exercise every day. Hard exercise, on the other hand, requires a recovery day following the session. When you work out daily (instead of 2-3 days per week) you may be able to burn more calories from exercise.
  • Maintain a consistent exercise program. Even though intense exercise is effective for weight loss, hard workouts put your body at a higher risk for injury and burnout. And you’re not likely to burn enough calories for weight loss while you’re recovering on the couch. Easy workouts are usually safer for your body and may allow you to be more consistent, week to week and month to month.

  • Keep hunger levels steady. Hard workouts often increase hunger levels. And sometimes they even increase your sense of entitlement to food. For example, you might feel that you deserve a high-calorie meal or treat after hard exercise because you earned it with your effort. But easy workouts are less likely to leave you starving. The result is that you may eat less with an easy fitness program.

If you are healthy enough for vigorous activity, hard workouts are good for your body. High-Intensity  exercise helps to build muscle and burn fat. But easy workouts can speed up weight loss, too.

2 Easy Workouts to Lose Weight Fast

There are two easy workout routines listed below. Choose a fitness plan based on your current level of fitness and health.

1. Easy Exercise Routine for Beginners
This plan works well for people who don’t exercise at all. The easy exercises will jolt your metabolism out of lazy mode and get it moving again. But to make this plan work, you need to keep your workouts short and manageable. That way, you never have an excuse to skip a session.

For this plan, you’ll exercise 1-3 times each day, but each workout won’t last long. You don’t need to change clothes, you probably won’t get too sweaty and you don’t need any extra equipment.

Easy beginner workout:

* 7 minutes fast walk

* 7 minutes of easy lunges and easy push ups

* 7 minutes fast walk
You can do this workout at a local park, at your office, or in your home. Set reminders on your smartphone to remind yourself to complete your sessions. Or better yet, recruit a friend to hold you accountable.

Need more of a challenge? Swap brisk stair climbing for walking. If you are at work, climb the office stairs, do lunges on the landing and push-ups against the wall.

Why this easy fitness plan works:
The duration of the workout makes it easier to tolerate and more likely that you’ll stick to the plan. And even though the workouts are short, you are still burning substantial calories in a short period of time. Done properly three times per day, you can burn up to 300 – 500 calories. If you do this easy workout around mealtime, you’ll probably also shorten the amount of time you spend eating which will help you to decrease the amount of food you want to consume.

2. Easy Exercise Routine for Regular Exercisers
This plan works for people who already exercise. The purpose of this plan is to bump your body out of its regular routine for faster weight loss. You’ll do this by adding more activity to your day, but you’ll keep the extra sessions easy so that your body and brain don’t get burned out.

Your easy workout will consist of adding 30-45 minutes of easy enjoyable activity at the opposite end of your day as your normal workout:

* If you work out in the morning, add a brisk evening work to your schedule.
* If you exercise in the evening, consider biking or walking to work in the morning.
Why this easy fitness plan works?
It’s common for people who exercise regularly to do the same routine week after week. If you do the same exercises at the same intensity all the time you’ll get the same results. Your body hits a plateau. This plan increases your activity level without added stress or strain to your joints. So you burn more calories without taxing your body.

Boost Your Easy Exercise Routine for Faster Weight Loss

Your new easy exercise routine will help you burn more calories. But you can lose weight faster by adding these challenges:

  • Skip dessert for a week. Grab a small serving of berries instead
  • Skip the drinks that cause weight gain and drink water instead. Not a fan of water? Learn to make flavored water to curb your cravings.
  • Dump starch. Instead of eating empty calorie white foods like bread, white rice or pasta, fill up on a variety of lean protein and good carbs.

Turn Fast Weight Loss into Long-Term Success

If you stick to your easy workout routine, you should see some change in the scale or in the way your clothes fit after a week or two. Then ask yourself this question: was it worth it?

If the answer is yes, then keep your easy fitness plan going. You may even want to make it more challenging by adding moderate exercise and high intensity sessions. Then start tracking your diet to make sure you eat the right amount of protein to lose weight and maintain muscle.

If the answer is no, don’t worry. Even an easy exercise plan requires a big commitment. You may not have been ready for the investment. But don’t give up entirely. Choose a few parts of the plan that seem manageable and try to incorporate them into your schedule. Your weight loss will happen more slowly, but at least it will happen.
